There are many students of non-English speaking background in secondary classrooms throughout Australia who are experiencing learning difficulties because they are not sufficiently literate in English, or in their first language. The articles in this book have been prepared in order to assist teachers whose task it is to equip such students learning in school or living in Australia.
Adolescent students with extensive interruptions to their education, priory to their arrival in Australia are the focus of this book. Teaching these students can be a challenging task for post primary teachers, many of whom are not trained to teach early/intermediate literacy skills. The purpose of this book is to assist all teachers, specifically English as a Second Language but also subject teacher in teaching this small but significant group of students. Taken together the articles which comprise this book highlight how a sensitive and appropriate educational environment can be developed to help these students achieve in an Australian school setting.
